Before returning the rental car earlier this month, we made another stop in the small town of Comares. It’s a beautiful mix of Moorish architecture and mountain environs. I really appreciate how it is built directly into the rocky hillsides. Just beware of the overzealous lady who tries to lure you into her home to force you to buy her local produce.

Spain Ferrata Quest has begun! 3 down. Yesterday I traveled to the town of Comares, a quaint pueblo built into the hillside. It is in a striking location surrounded by scenic mountain views and an interesting mesa. On the cliff sides skirting the town are 3 via ferratas. On the opposite side of town is a fourth. I was welcomed by an overcast misty morning. This allowed me to explore a bit and knock out 3 routes before the sun started cooking the area.

5 miles east of us is an even smaller town named Sedella. I expected it to be a carbon copy of Canillas, but it has a unique character of its own. Still full of whitewashed buildings, but also more of a Moorish flair to the architecture. We were greeted by the town puppy who insisted on joining us on our exploration. The food at the one restaurant in town, El Chiringuito, was stellar. Quite possibly the best croquetas I have ever had in my life. Our short drive back to Canillas was slowed by local traffic—the goat herds were retiring for the evening.

We finally got to try out our first hike in the ar

We finally got to try out our first hike in the area yesterday. We chose a shorter, easier route as an introduction and to ensure we’d be done before the day grew too hot. My expectations were low because of the heat and the Sun’s tendency to kill everything in the summer. I was pleasantly surprised to discover how beautiful and lush it all still is. The Saltillo hike was relatively varied—forested areas, mountain views, suspension bridge, elevated walkways, and multiple small pools. It was also quite fun and a worthwhile outing.

Oddly enough, the day after we arrived in town, a 5 day festival began. The festivities mainly occur late at night once it has cooled. Though, fireworks seem to be launched nonstop all day.

Encapsulating who my uncle George was in words is a difficult task. Perhaps if you mixed together David Hasselhoff, Nicolas Cage, and Goofy in a blender, you could begin to approach his personality. He was a benevolent ball of chaos who was ceaselessly entertaining—even when he didn’t mean to be. He was brimming with enthusiasm and constantly excited by everything. He never lost that childhood sense of wonder and awe. He was the kind of uncle who always told you he loved you and was sincerely intrigued by anything you did—always eager with encouragement. Constantly full of surprises, with a unique mind that no one could quite comprehend. The world is less interesting without him and I will miss him. I love you too, Uncle George.
