We heard stories of a woman swept downstream and varying pieces of advice for how to succeed. On day 4, we assessed the river, decided to try the bypasses, and forged our own route. #jmtsectionhike #jmt2023 #bearcreekcrossing #sierranevada #goprohero11 #sierrabackpacking

The final day. All that remained was the ascent over Piute Pass and the descent down to the North Lake parking area where Ryan’s car awaited. A few stream crossings remained and a modest amount of snow, but overall this day was our easiest. Piute continued to be beautiful and varied. Early in the afternoon, we exited. We returned to civilization where we could devour Tums, eat happy hour foods, and watch Ryan fail to find an open coffee shop.

The hard Day 5 (of 6): ~14 miles
_______________
The hardest days were behind us. The morning was a straight-forward, mostly downhill hike from Sallie Keys to Piute Creek. We had dropped to our lowest altitude meaning heat and mild mugginess were beginning to intrude, but fate smiled upon us and filled the sky with clouds. After an extended lunch and baths beneath the Piute bridge, we began the long trek up the Piute Trail. We were greeted with spectacular views of the roaring river, granite walls, lush greenery, mini river glaciers, and welcome drizzle. We ended the day with multiple exciting creek crossings and another mosquito-laden sunset dinner.

Day 4 (of 6): ~15 miles _______________
Our long Day 4 (of 6): ~15 miles
_______________
Our longest day. We needed to cover some substantial ground—our pace had been much slower than usual—so we started earlier than previously. The first half of the day went smoothly. We crossed Bear Ridge and the meadows fairly quickly. There were a few river wades, but nothing worrisome. Then, we came upon the notorious Bear Creek crossing. We had heard stories of hikers being swept down river and we decided not to chance it. Thus, we sought out the detour. We had been inundated with conflicting advice about bypassing this crossing, almost entirely based on traveling North instead of South as we were. We headed up river and sought our own solution. After a protracted period encompassing multiple tributary crossings, questionable log traverses, a minor squabble, bushwhacking, and route finding we rejoined the JMT. A snowy Selden Pass was our next challenge including surprising views of iced over Lake Marie and Heart Lake. It was a bit unnerving walking above hidden lake outlets and other bits of snow-covered water. We broke free of the snow fields as we descended toward Sallie Keys—where we would build camp and endure blood-thirsty insects as we dined at sunset.

The day t Day 3 (of 6): ~9 miles
_______________
The day that reinforced our one mile per hour speed. Over Silver Pass, across the trail waterfall (shared in an earlier post), down the Vermillion Cliffs, and onward to the VVR cutoff and base of Bear Ridge. Creek crossings grew more challenging and any hopes of taking a side-trip to VVR were dashed. Instead we enjoyed a fairly early camp where we could relax in the cool and rapid river and battle never-ending mosquito attacks.

The day we learned what we were truly in for. Our just-in-case micro spikes became crucial as we climbed a substantial snow slope above Barney Lake. We would eventually end our day at Lake of the Lone Indian. But first we would encounter flooded trails, raging rivers once called creeks, iced over lakes, and much more snow than anticipated. Our average pace was a mile per hour.

After hours of driving and shuttle setting, we embarked from Duck Pass Trailhead late in the afternoon. A short few hours brought us to Barney Lake, where we’d camp for the night and overhear rock and snowfall in the dark. Our hike in was mostly uneventful save for Ryan losing and rediscovering his treasured Buff in his own shirtsleeve and Scott collapsing a snow bridge—leaving his ass and legs dangling in space. The stage was set.

Hiking roughly 62 miles from Duck Pass to Piute Pa Hiking roughly 62 miles from Duck Pass to Piute Pass via a section of the JMT is expected to be somewhat challenging. This year’s exceptional rain and snow elevated that challenge considerably. Snow covered passes, raging rivers, flooded trails, ravenous mosquitos, unexpected route finding, and questionable fords had us moving at a much slower pace than anticipated. After 5 and a half days, we successfully exited Piute Pass.
